What is a “Flat Lay” and Why Do I Need a Details Box?

When preparing for your photographer or videographer on your wedding day, there are a few essentials to consider: the timeline, shot list, address, and of course, the details box.

Do I Really Need a Details Box?

While it’s not mandatory, a details box can enhance your wedding photos by showcasing the small items that contribute to your wedding’s overall vibe. It typically includes items that are crucial to your day, such as your shoes, rings, dress, veil, and any other significant accessories.

Why Should I Care About Flat Lays?

Flat lays might sound mundane, but they’re far from boring! These styled shots capture the essence of your wedding day by featuring all the small touches you’ve meticulously planned over the past 12+ months. A well-composed flat lay can showcase:

  • Rings(engagement and both wedding bands)
  • Jewelry you’re wearing on your big day
  • Ribbon from your bouquet
  • Wedding bouquet and/or flower petals
  • Invitation suite (including the envelope)

Pro Tip: Consider ordering an extra invitation suite with a faux address for your photos:

  • Vow books
  • Wooden hanger for the dress
  • Wedding day perfume
  • Garter(s)
  • Family heirlooms (such as your grandmother’s pearl necklace, your mother’s wedding earrings, or your nana’s gold rouge box)

One of our favorite things is including family heirlooms in your flat lay. This can add a personal touch and make your photos even more special and unique to your event.

If you wanted to go the extra mile, you could even split up the details into two boxes, his and hers.

Some items for the men’s box would be:

  • Suspenders/belt
  • Cologne
  • Bow Tie/Tie
  • Dress shoes
  • Boutonniere
  • Dress watch

The best part about your detail shots/flat lays, you

can have as much or as little in them as you like.
